MASSIVE ATTACK

Marking the 20th anniversary of UVA's first collaboration with Massive Attack for their 100th Window Tour, UVA joined forces with Robert Del Naja and filmmaker Adam Curtis to create a new live show for the band's 2024/25 tour.

I was tasked with building a custom playback system in Touchdesigner which allowed the team to build different generative treatments and sequence them along a timeline for each track, similar to how you might do this is in other popular media server software.

My system included the following:

  • BPM quantized timeline UI with keyframeable cues and waveform visualization

  • Track system allowing for separate tracks for each song in the set

  • Timecode implementation to trigger tracks and frame lock the timeline

  • 3D visualizer with screen pixel simulation

  • Track rendering system with render list

  • Asset management system allowing for multiple user workflow

  • Full menu UI system

Software development

  • Design and build of media sever style interface and backend in Touchdesigner.

  • Development of a variety of custom modules in Touchdesigner such as face tracking, particle systems, text tools as well as many more.

  • Optimization of all custom assets in Touchdesigner system.

Content sequencing

  • Construction and sequencing of generative content treatments for various tracks in the show.

Technical management (UVA)

  • Specification and management of technical equipment and systems for the UVA teams portion of the project.
